Original U.S. Spanish-American War Marine Corps Model 1898 Khaki Tropical Uniform Tunic

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Scarce original model 1898 U.S. Marine Corps Khaki Tropical Coat and Matching Trousers. This Uniform dates from 1898-1904 period, and was first fielded by Marines in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. This has features of an early coat such as the small pocket flaps, Early brass domed buttons (all marked BY PIPPY CO NY), chest pleats, and a 1 ½” tall standing collar.

Specifications from this period are particularly murky, but from what we have found, this is an earlier pattern jacket. For some, these circa 1900 khaki coats are considered the “holy grail” for collectors of U.S. Marine Corps material.

The tunic is in wonderful condition and does show signs of wear in a hot, humid climate. There is staining present and the tunic itself presents itself as “salty” with a starch like feel to it. There is no extensive damage present and this is honestly one of the best we have seen lately.

Comes more than ready for further research and display.

The Spanish-American war proved to be a crucible for the U.S. Marine Corps. While not fully knowing how they would use it, soon after the war’s outbreak naval authorities ordered the establishment of a Marine battalion with its own transport. The activities of this battalion, whose men numbered less than a quarter of the active Marine Corps, not only received public approbation, but also suggested a change in the future relationship between the Marine Corps and the Navy.

During the Spanish–American War (1898), Marines led American forces ashore in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, demonstrating their readiness for deployment. At Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, the Marines seized an advanced naval base that remains in use today. Between 1899 and 1916, the Corps continued its record of participation in foreign expeditions, including the Philippine–American War, the Boxer Rebellion in China, Panama, the Cuban Pacifications, the Perdicaris incident in Morocco, Veracruz, Santo Domingo, and the Banana Wars in Haiti and Nicaragua; the experiences gained in counterinsurgency and guerrilla operations during this period were consolidated into the Small Wars Manual.
