Original U.S. Spanish-American War US Army M-1895 6th Infantry Medical Corps Major’s Tunic

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Spanish-American War of 1898 was brief, with relatively few battle casualties, but epidemic disease, especially typhoid fever, devastated the volunteer troops. Post-war investigations and commissions generated better understanding of the problem of asymptomatic carriers and a series of recommendations that greatly improved military medicine. The new practices, including the development of a typhoid vaccine, saved thousands of lives during World War I. Studies that established the role of the mosquito in yellow fever spawned preventive measures that ended the huge epidemics of that disease in the Western Hemisphere; this in turn made possible successful construction of the Panama Canal.

This uniform is a fine tailor made M-1895 Undress Blouse Jacket. Constructed of blue wool with bullion shoulder ranks, full lining with all buttons present. The left and right side features beautiful 6th Infantry crossed rifles above the medical maltese cross symbol. All gold/silver bullion is unfortunately tarnished, but does not subtract from the beauty of the tunic. Overall condition is good but there are moth nips present throughout the uniform. The tailor tag located on the inside rear of the lining reads as The M.C. LILLEY & CO. Columbus, O. / Military & Society Goods.

Comes more than ready for further research and display.
