Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Completely built in New England around 1822, this is a very nice example of a contract-made Springfield type musket, intended for state and local militias. These often used commercially available parts, which could be mixed with military issue parts acquired from Springfield Armory. The musket bears all iron mounts of the French pattern, the .69" barrel measures 40 inches, and the musket 55 1/2 inches overall.
Very unusually, the lock is a real quality English-style Flintlock Trade Lock with a roller on the Frizzen Spring, signed THO'S CORDIS / WARRANTED. While the style is typical English, we cannot find anything on an English maker named Thomas Cordis. He does however appear in lists of U.S. gunsmiths as an unlocated lock plate maker. Additional research shows there was a Capt. Thomas Cordis in New England, right around this time frame. Possibly he went into business importing locks, or possibly parts, and assembling them on lock plates. Definitely some great research potential with this musket.
Regarding other markings, there is a clear 1822 stamped onto the tang of the butt plate, and the breech of the barrel is marked M.L.M / Eagle's Head / P, a Springfield Armory proof mark. This barrel then was clearly made between 1822-1824, and inspected by Moses. L. Morse. We do not know if it was a contract barrel, or one made at the arsenal itself, as markings and records of the time were not very standardized. The back of the wrist has a nice silver escutcheon behind the barrel tang, not engraved with an Officer's initials but surrounded by quality silver wire inlay.
A very nice example of an Officer's Militia Flintlock musket from New England. Ready to display!
