Item Description
Original Item: Only One available. These are VERY rare but original and known as "QUAKER RIFLES" among collectors. Intended for the training of raw recruits, these were never intended to be operational or fired. These are made from obsoleted and/or damaged Springfield Trapdoor rifles, with the rear 19" from the receiver forward being made of wooden dowel and joining the front 7" of the original steel barrel under the forward barrel band so that the Rifle looks fully operational from the front.
The Breech block on this example is marked:
MODEL
1884
U.S.
In this case the M1884/88 model is fitted with the standard integral Rod Bayonet, cut down to the appropriate length. The Barrel's overall length is reduced to just 26" for training purposes. The serial number 551678 appears on the receiver, indicating manufacture in 1893, with an Inspector's Cartouche of SWP 1891 appearing on the left side of the stock by the action. In addition the firing pin has been "fixed" into it's casing as an additional security measure. The breech block has also been soldered closed to prevent attempting to chamber a round.
The stock on this example is in very good shape, and is still proud over the lock plate. There are some dents in the wood, as expected on a rifle this age, but the stock does not appear to have had any major repairs or damage, and still has a lovely color.
The butt plate is marked U.S. and the lower band is U marked. Metal finish is good, but there has definitely been some light corrosion on the metalwork, however the finish is still nice in most places. The rifle still has both sling swivels and the stacking swivel. Lock is marked with an eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.
The elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from 15 September 1879 to 18 June 1894. A stylized P in a circle under the wrist of the stock indicates that the rifle passed all of its overpressure proof testing. This indicates that the stock at least, was used originally on an intact rifle.
These are VERY HARD TO FIND and is the first that we have had, an original Springfield "Quaker" training rifle!
