Original U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Model 1873 / 1884 Cavalry Carbine made in 1880 - Serial 132116

Item Description

Original Item: Only One available. This is a nice service used example of the classic Springfield trapdoor Cavalry Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:

U.S.
MODEL
1884

Offered in good condition is this trapdoor carbine is in .45-70 government caliber, with serial # 132116 stamped on the rear of the receiver. The carbine has overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. The serial number indicates production in 1880, unfortunately just a bit too late for Little Bighorn. It has the correct two part trigger guard and smooth trigger of the model 1873. However it has been updated with a new model 1884 breech block and Buffington Adjustable rear sight, as well as the correct barrel band with a cutout in the top.

The stock on this example does show use and wear. It has many small dents, chips, and gouges, the look of a carbine that saw long service in the field. There are however no major structural issues. The bore is in very good condition, with clear lands and grooves, and a partly bright finish with overall light haze. The breech block extractor is present and functional, though we have not tested the ability to eject an actual spent cartridge.

The butt plate is marked U.S. and the barrel band is U marked. Metal finish worn, with some areas of original finish present, but the rest is a faded plum color. The butt stock has the correct cleaning rod compartment, which is unfortunately empty. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, no sling swivels, and a standard rear ladder sight. It still has the correct saddle ring bar, however the sliding ring was lost at some point. The lock markings are unfortunately completely worn away.

Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: a capital R on top; and a V over a P over a faint Eagle's head on the left side just above the stock.

This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very rare example of a Springfield Trapdoor Carbine in very good condition with loads of history and patina! Ready to display!
