Original U.S. Vietnam War 282nd Assault Helicopter Company “Black Cats” Photo Album - 55 Color Photos

Item Description

Original Items: One-Of-A-Kind. The 282nd Assault Helicopter Company was activated at Fort Benning, Georgia on 7 October 1965. The Company was deployed to the Republic of Vietnam in May and June of 1966. They made their base camp at Marble Mountain Airfield southeast of Da Nang and were assigned to the 212th Combat Aviation Battalion of the 16th Combat Aviation Group. The 282nd initially flew missions in I Corps & II Corps in support of MACV, SF, LRRP, Ranger and Hac Bao units. This included elements of the USMC, USAF, USN, ARVN and the Austrlians. Their area of operation was as far north as Hue Citadel, south to Dong Ba Thin, west to Ban Me Thuot and Kontum. The 282nd 2nd Flight Platoon A.O. also included a section in Quang Tri and flew missions regularly to the DMZ in support of A1 and A3 and west into the Ashau Valley. The 282nd 1st and 2nd Flight Platoons call-sign, "Black Cat" was assigned to the company on 23 March 1966. The Black Cat patch was the original Crest designed by Crew Chief Jack Brown in January 1966.

The photo album measures about 10" x 12", and contains 55 original and personal photographs of an unnamed Specialist 4th Class. The pictures show all various stages of FOB life while in Vietnam. They show troopers relaxing in their hooches, drinking, working on the Helos, soldiers loading onto the hueys and aerial shots of their area of operations. The best feature of the photos is that they are early color types and absolutely beautiful. The condition is excellent but the front and back covers does have tearing present with large sections of paper missing.

This is a fantastic example of what appears to be an early war photo album. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
