Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine Vietnam War Era U.S. Army M5A1 bayonet and fighting knife for the M1 Garand rifle. Produced in the 1960s, these were the last official U.S. issued bayonets made for the venerable long rifle. It comes complete with an original German-made M8A1 scabbard.
The cross guard is cicely marked U.S. M5A1 / MILPAR COL on the blade side of the cross guard. This indications manufacture by by the Columbus Milpar and Manufacturing Co., Columbus, OH.. They manufactured these bayonets concurrently with M6 bayonets for the M14 rifle they were producing, and they later made M7 bayonets for the M16 rifle. All of these used the same basic blade design, with different grips and attaching hardware.
The bayonet has an excellent nearly unissued blade with the original phosphate finish. Zero post-manufacture sharpening that we can see, and the factory grind is still nice and bright. There is just a bit of runner wear on the finish, as is common with all edged weapons. The bayonet has the correct phenolic grips, which are in great shape. There is very little evidence of use anywhere on the bayonet.
Comes with an OD green fiber scabbard marked U.S. M8A1 / GERMANY also in offered in very good condition. This later design features a hard plastic body, not thermoplastic impregnated cotton fabric, with a dark OD green canvas frog. The scabbard looks to pretty much be unissued.
The perfect accessory for any M1 Garand rifle that was used post-war. Ready to display!
