Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The "Woodman's Pal" survival ax was originally a tool for forestry or agriculture, but quickly earned a place as an outstanding military implement. The well designed and balanced blade was first procured in World War II, and was useful for brush clearing, construction, camouflage, and a multitude of other listed uses. The Woodman's Pal served through the Vietnam War and is still part of the military inventory of edged tools in the 21st Century.
The official designation used during WWII was the LC-14-B, which would be stamped on the blade. However after WWII, this marking was not seen as often, and many were also privately purchased. During the Vietnam war, the Woodman's Pal was designated as the "Type IV Survival Ax", the main component of the "Tool Kit, Survival, Type IV" issued as NSN 8465-973-4807 under specification MIL-S-8642C. It was issued to air crews, helicopter crews, and for other survival purposes. It would include the tool, carrier, sharpening stone, "burning glass", and instructions.
This example is in excellent condition, and almost looks to be unissued, with just wear from storage. The blade still has the original protectant applied to the edge, though the original tape that would be over it has been removed. It shows no signs of sharpening or use, and the stacked leather handle is pretty much brand new.
The blade itself is marked:
FRANK & WARREN, INC.
SURVIVAL AX TYPE IV
MIL-S-8642C
The belt carrier is in good shape, and has working snaps on both the belt loop and closure strap. The zipper is also fully functional, and there is still the tie down lace present in one of the pockets. The sharpening stone is present and the interior pockets still contains 2 of the three small manuals: CARE, USE AND SHARPENING OF KNIFE LC-14-B, and LIVING IN THE JUNGLE WITH THE U.S. ARMY KNIFE LC-14-B (THE WOODMAN’S PAL), both written by Frederick Ehrsam, C.E., and copyrighted 1942 and 1943. The booklets are in good condition and are completely legible.
There is some wear to the fabric from storage, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Overall this is a great chance to own a classic U.S. Military survival tool as issued during the Vietnam War, complete with the original belt carrier!
