Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a tremendous example of a War of 1812 Artillery Platoon Officers’ sword, with a lovely eagle’s head pommel and dark brown horn grips. This exact model of Eagle Pommel Sword is found on Page 98 of “The American Eagle-Pommel Sword: The Early Years - 1794-1830” by E. Andrew Mowbray, where it is referred to as an Artillery Platoon Officers’ Sword, c. 1805. This is notable in confirming the sword as a War of 1812 utilized example, rather than a post-war piece.

The sword features a lovely 32¾” straight blade with a single uninterrupted fuller. The blade has held up very well considering the absence of its scabbard. There is evidence of past oxidation cleaning which has given the blade a lovely patina. The brass handguard is a bit loose to the blade, but isn’t at risk of loss or breakage. The dark horn fluted grip is in great shape with just some cracking from age. The eagle’s head pommel is still lovely without any denting.

From the book: While conforming to artillery regulations calling for a "black" sword grip, few swords using such grips are to be found in association with this type of pommel. It would seem that the dark brown horn grips originated in the Birmingham area. Certainly, the city supplied large numbers of short sabres with such grips to the English army during the 1790's, and a lesser number to the United States as the style became old fashioned in the home market. The author feels that many of these grips - perhaps nearly all - were manufactured by pressing within molds. Horn when subjected to steam - common in a city that derived its power from coal rather than water - becomes plastic. By avoiding handwork, considerable time in manufacture could be saved while the final effect remained equal to, or better than, the hand made product. The plain spadroon blade and simple guard would have further contributed to an inexpensive arm for a junior officer.

This is a tremendous example of a genuine War of 1812 Issue sword for an Artillery  Platoon Officer, ready for further research and display!
