Original U.S. War of 1812 Era Etched Officer's Eagle Head Sword with Ivory Grip and Leather Scabbard

Item Description

Original item: Only One Available. The War of 1812 was a very strange War. The Americans invaded Canada, the British retaliated and burned the White House, Peace was declared and then the British lost the Battle of New Orleans because no one realized the War was over!

Here we have a very smart looking, original Eagle Headed and ivory gripped U.S. Officer's sword from the 1812 War period or immediate post war era. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" hand guard and a a very nice closed beak Eagle pommel. The grip is fluted ivory or bone, an is still mostly tight to the tang, though there is a small chip near the ferrule and play is present. The hand guard is also very loose, and the original gilding on the brass is present but mostly gone. Unfortunately there is a break in the hand guard close to the pommel, which someone in the past has taped over.

Overall it is 33 inches long, with a 28 inch long engraved single edge curved blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some light engraving on the first 1/3 of the blade. The old inlay is still visible in places, with a large section where the original "fire blue" finish is still present. There is also some light staining and surface pitting on the last half of the blade, as well as near the cross guard, but nothing major.

The included leather scabbard appears to be original to the sword and is in mostly solid condition. The brass hardware is tarnished but still lovely. The throat hardware is no longer attached to the leather and will move freely and come off.

This is a lovely, rather difficult sword to find. Comes more than ready for further research and display!
