Item Description
Original Item: Only One available. This is a very nice Whitney Arms Co. Rolling block carbine, which is essentially a clone of the Remington Rolling block system, with some minor changes. It was made by the well known Whitney Arms Company, based in that time in both New Haven and Whitneyville Connecticut. The latter area, today near Hamden Connecticut, was so named due to it's association with the famous Eli Whitney, the inventor of the Cotton Gin. Whitney also manufactured firearms, such as Springfield Muskets, and his son, also named Eli Whitney, followed in his footsteps. The factory was expanded, and the area became known as "Whitneyville", making firearms throughout the 19th century. Eventually, after several consolidations, the factory became "Whitneyville Armory." By this time unfortunately it was no longer at the forefront of firearms development, and mostly made less expensive derivatives of popular designs.
This Whitney Arms Rolling Block carbine looks to possibly have originally been a long rifle, shortened later to carbine length. The forestock shows a cleaning rod channel, which would not be present on a carbine. We do not know if this was done at the factory, or by a gunsmith later, but the barrel is crowned properly, and is marked on the top with:
WHITNEY-ARMS-CO.-WHITNEYVILLE-CONN.
It also has a 43 stamped next to the witness mark, indicating the .43 Spanish caliber. The receiver tang is marked with the New Haven address:
WHITNEY ARMS CO.
NEW HAVEN. CT. U.S.A.
The lower receiver tang is also marked, showing serial number 82781 clearly.
The condition of the carbine is quite nice, with a lovely patina on the metal and wood. The action functions correctly, with an intact ejector, and the bore does show lands and grooves, though it definitely also shows areas of fouling and oxidation. The carbine has a bronze bead front sight, however the rear sight has been removed or broke off some time ago.
Most unusual and in nice very good collector's condition, ready to display!
