Item Description

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely grouping consisting of the burial flag, memorial record, and WWI photographs of Leonard Hedin, Company C, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division. Hedin saw combat in the St. Mihiel & Meuse-Argonne Offensives as well as the Villers-en-Haye and Puvenelle (Lorraine) Defensive Sectors.

The group comes with Leonard's Memorial Service booklet, a photograph of Leonard's company, a photo of Leonard (left) with his brother Emil who was disqualified from the draft due to an abscess on his side, and a photograph of Leonard & Emil's brother Bill (Willie) Hedin, who served with the HQ Company, 319th Machine Gun Battalion, 82nd Division, seeing combat in the St. Mihiel & Meuse-Argonne Offensives as well as the Lucey & Marbache Defensive Sectors. There's also a postcard from Willie telling his parents he safely arrived back in New York.

The flag is 50 stars as Leonard passed away in 1978, and measures roughly 52 x 84”. It has a tag for the Valley Forge Flag Co., and is in good shape overall. We tried to fold it into the Burial flag shape, but couldn’t get it 100% perfect. There are tutorials online which show how to properly fold it.

Leonard Hedin was born on May 14th, 1895 in Galesburg, Illinois. He was inducted into the Army on April 28th, 1918 and was assigned to Company C, 357th Infantry Regiment on May 15th, 1918. He went overseas on June 20th, 1918 and saw heavy combat in the St. Mihiel & Meuse-Argonne Offensives as well as the Villers-en-Haye and Puvenelle (Lorraine) Defensive Sectors. He returned stateside on June 7th, 1919. He passed away on September 25th, 1978, at the age of 83.

This is a lovely grouping worthy of framing and display to preserve the story and memory of Leonard Hedin and his brother, Bill, who both fought valiantly during the First World War. Comes ready for further research and display.
