Original Item: Only One Available. This is a true 16” WWI Era M1905 Springfield rifle bayonet by Springfield Armory, complete with an original M1910 Scabbard. It is dated 1920, being made just after WWI for the M1903 Springfield rifle. It is still in the original issued configuration, with the blued 16 inch blade, blued handle and cross guard, and wooden grip scales. The M1905 was originally designed with a bright steel blade, but upon U.S. entry into WWI in 1917, the specification was changed to a fully blued bayonet. Many of these were reissued for use in WW2, and were parkerized and even cut down, but this one was not.
The blade ricasso is marked with SA, for the Springfield Armory in Springfield Mass, the primary center for the manufacture of United States military firearms from 1777 until its closing in 1968. Below this is the Ordnance flaming bomb and date of manufacture 1920. The other side of the ricasso is marked with U.S. above serial number 1167438. The blade is in great shape, with a nice grind and little wear to speak of. The handle and cross guard are a nice aged blue, and the original wooden grip scales are in good condition, with a good amount of the factory "ribbed" surface intact, and no cracks, chips, or large dents. We would assume being issued during the interwar period, that this example went home with the soldier it was issued to, and did not see any wartime service.
The scabbard included is an original WWI issue M1910 scabbard, which has a raw-hide clad wooden inner scabbard, with an aluminum throat. The scabbard still has the canvas and leather "sleeve", which is so often missing. The retaining hooks are still intact, so the bayonet locks securely into the scabbard. The leather tip of the scabbard has seen wear, and is worn at the tip.
