Original U.S. WWI Framed Portrait of Officer Painted by German Prisoner of War Dated 1919 - 8½ x 13½”

Regular price $295.00

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely painted ovular portrait of Lieutenant Paul Cairnes Hunter, 304th Stevedore Regiment, QMC. The back of the frame notes that the portrait was painted by a German POW. The portrait is signed and dated in the corner, Olipps Frk. 1919, likely the rank and name of the German Prisoner of War who painted it.

The frame measures 8½ x 13½” and is in great shape. The inscription on the back of the frame reads:

Lt. Paul Cairnes Hunter
Painted by German
Prisoner overseas in
1918. Major Hunter
Died in 1935.

From our research we found that Hunter went overseas on October 4th, 1918, returning on July 4th, 1919. There is no hanger or mount to hang the painting, so it will need something attached. A great example, ready for further research and display.
