Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fair condition 16” WWI M1905 Springfield rifle bayonet by Springfield Armory, complete with an original M1910 Scabbard without the sleeve. It is dated 1908, being made during the pre-WWI period for the M1903 Springfield rifle. This example has had the very tip of the bayonet snapped off. The M1905 was originally designed with a bright steel blade, but upon U.S. entry into WWI in 1917, the specification was changed to a fully blued bayonet, and many bright bayonets on hand were blued to match. Many of these were reissued for use in WW2, and were parkerized and even cut down. This example however escaped post manufacture modification.
The blade ricasso is marked with SA for the Springfield Armory in Springfield Mass, the primary center for the manufacture of United States military firearms from 1777 until its closing in 1968. Below this is the Ordnance flaming bomb and date of manufacture 1908. The other side of the ricasso is marked with U.S. above serial number 285021.
The blade is in very rough and oxidized condition, with the tip of the bayonet missing, roughly ½” worth. The hilt is also heavily oxidized but the wooden grips are in fair shape with scratches and scuffs. The scabbard included is an original WWI issue M1910 scabbard, which has a raw-hide clad wooden inner scabbard, with a steel throat. This example is missing the sleeve, so the raw-hide is visible and has a very well-worn patina. There is some shrinking and damage to the rawhide inner cover of the wooden body, but overall it has a lovely service worn look.
