Original U.S. WWI Named Artillery Grouping Featuring Uniform Set, British Made M1917 Helmet and M1911 Campaign Hat - Private William H. Folsom

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a wonderful grouping that would serve as an excellent introduction into collecting WWI uniform items. Not only is it attributed, the grouping consists of most of the few items needed for a great display; uniform set, dogtags, helmet and campaign cover!

The grouping is attributed to Private William H. Folsom (ASN: 833884) who was a member of 22nd CO, Company L. We have not been able to determine exactly what unit he belonged to but with the Artillery Red hat cord on the Campaign Hat we do believe he originated from an artillery unit.

The items in this grouping:
- US Army M1911 Felt Campaign Hat With Artillery Cord: The Hat, Service, M1911 (Campaign Hat) was made of OD wool felt with a wide brim and "Montana peak" crown. There were ventilation holes in the crown with grommets, a silk hatband, and a silk and brass braid cord closed by a knot and terminated with a tassel. Inside was a leather sweatband and an attached chin strap. The Army model was dark brown OD in color.

The hat cords worn around the base of the crown indicated the branch for enlisted men and rank for officers. The system was similar to the piping colors for the Garrison Cap, copied from the Campaign Hat. Unit and rank insignia were sometimes worn on the front of the hat when authorized.

This campaign hat is a private purchase example and does have the decorative rows of stitching around the brim, often not seen with private purchases. There appears to be a faded manufacture stamp present but is too faded to be read properly.

The hat is offered in good condition considering it is well over 100 years old! The fine fur felt is good with some moth nips and tearing peppered throughout. The original crown band ribbon is intact with the original leather chin strap. The original leather sweatband is present but mostly detached.

- British Made M1917 Doughboy Helmet Relic: This is a lovely, rather worn and beaten Doughboy helmet. The heat stamp is a little difficult to read but we can discern the “FS” for manufacture by Thomas Firth & Sons Ltd firm of Sheffield. The heat stamp and the split rivets on the chinstrap bales are a solid indication and a good reference point for identifying British made helmets for American use during the Great War. The helmet is incomplete with heavy denting on the top, a detached chinstrap bale, no liner or complete chinstrap.

The uniform set is in lovely condition and does not appear to have seen much use. There is no extensive damage present that we could find. It does appear that all buttons are present. Included with the uniform is a lovely set of two wool leg wraps. The canteen is an earlier issued type, as seen used during the Spanish-American war era, not uncommon to see still being used during the Great War. Also included are his original dogtags and “kit bag”.

A lovely beginner set that comes more than ready for further research and display.
