Original Item: Only One Available: This is a wonderful M1917 US Army uniform tunic, worn by a member of the US Army’s 88th Infantry Division. Initially, personnel for the division were furnished by Selective Service men from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota. The 88th Division, like many National Army divisions, suffered heavily from transfers to Regular Army and National Guard units preparing to go overseas, delaying its combat readiness. In October and November 1917, men were transferred to the 34th and 87th Divisions. In February 1918, 12,000 men arrived from Iowa and Minnesota to bring the division to full strength, but, subsequently, about 16,000 men were transferred to the 30th, 33rd, 35th, 82nd, and 90th Divisions. In May and June 1918, 10,000 Selective Service men, mostly from Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota, joined the division.
The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917, and the issue of the dress uniform was suspended. With millions of men entering the service, the tailoring of the wool service coat was simplified. The service hat and canvas leggings continued to be issued to troops stationed in the United States, but troops assigned to the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) in Europe received new items including both French and British made overseas caps, spiral puttees, and steel trench helmets.
The uniform is in wonderful condition and shows signs of wear and use, but is present without any extensive damage. All buttons on the front are unfortunately missing and the collar discs are the standard US and “Crossed Rifles” for infantry. The left shoulder features a beautiful wool and green felt clover leaf shoulder sleeve insignia. Below the shoulder insignia is a wonderful red discharge chevron with a single overseas chevron just above the cuff.
