Original U.S. WWI US Army Air Service 28th Aero Squadron Uniform Set

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Set Available. The 28th Aero Squadron was a United States Army Air Service unit that fought on the Western Front during World War I.

The squadron was assigned as a Day Pursuit (Fighter) Squadron as part of the 3d Pursuit Group, First United States Army. Its mission was to engage and clear enemy aircraft from the skies and provide escort to reconnaissance and bombardment squadrons over enemy territory. It also attacked enemy observation balloons, and perform close air support and tactical bombing attacks of enemy forces along the front lines. After the 1918 Armistice with Germany, the squadron returned to the United States in June 1919 and was demobilized.

The current United States Air Force unit which holds its lineage and history is the 28th Bomb Squadron, assigned to the 7th Operations Group, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.

This uniform set includes a lovely patched tunic with collar devices and a pair of trousers. The tunic bears the dark blue and red roundel for the 28th Aero Squadron. The roundel appears to be hand made of wool and hand stitched onto the left shoulder. There is some moth nips present on the patch, but nothing too damaging. Below the roundel is a single chevron with 2 service stripes located just above the cuff. The collar discs are the standard US and the crossed flags for the Signals Service. The included pants are in similar condition to the tunic and both appear to be free of any significant damage.

This is a wonderful uniform set, perfect for the early Air Force collector! Comes ready for display.
