Item Description
Original Item: One only. This is a great example of the hard to find U.S. Browning M1917 & M1917A1 water-cooled Machine Gun Ammunition box. As originally constructed, these had a hinged lid with inset leather carry handle and spring loaded closing/locking latch. This example still has the leather handle, however it has broken, and is in delicate condition.
These were originally produced in plain wood finish, with OD green on the metal fittings, as seen on this example. The box design has two machined slots and slanted front corner for mounting directly to the tripod mount. The inside still retains the three stenciled bullet diagrams on the floor of the box to remind the packer which way the bullet heads must point when inserting a loaded belt, though they are quite faint. Overall condition is quite good, especially considering the age, and the hinge and front latch still work correctly.
