Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Introduced at the end of WWI and in use up through WWII, this is a very nice U.S. Marine Corps Square Entrenching Machete, made by the well known firm Collins & Co of Hartford, CT, and still with its original scabbard. These were intended to cut through brush as well as the ground to help secure a foothold during action. They were often used by landing forces to help quickly make a nice emplacement.
The blade on this example is in very good condition, and is properly marked COLLINS & CO. / HARTFORD on the left blade body, and U.S.M.C on the right. It also has the Collins model number NO 1001 on the left side. The 11 3/4" blade does have small areas of light staining in areas, as expected of a bright steel blade of this age. It does appear to have been sharpened somewhat during service, and has some small dents and chips on the edge. The grip is in great shape, with all rivets intact, and both scales still tight to the blade. They show very little evidence of abuse, with only a few dents and scratches.
The scabbard is the canvas and leather construction with a brass throat. The square shape is quite distinctive, and it really is relatively oversized for the blade, which gives it a lot of room to move when sheathed. The brass throat on these are attached by two relatively tiny rivets, so it is not uncommon them for them to be slightly loose like this one. The scabbard also has lost some of the stitching along the leather and canvas seams at the top and bottom, and the side seam was reinforced once. Over time the stitching unfortunately deteriorates, not uncommon for a nearly 100 year old item.
A great example of a rare U.S. Marine Corps Entrenching Machete, ready to display!
