Original U.S. WWII 1943 Dated Huffman Model 18 G519 Military Bicycle Serial H117493 - Fully Restored

Item Description

Original item Only One Available. This is an incredible fully restored and functional 1943 dated U.S. Army Contract G519 Huffman Model 18 Military Bicycle. We even test rode it! The pedals work and the rear "coaster" brake is still functional as well. It is comprised of with 90% original components, and we assume that the wheels/tires have been replaced at some point in the past. It has also definitely been completely refinished, possibly several times. This is a museum closing de-acquisition, so we unfortunately do not have any information prior to the sale.

The bottom of the frame bottom bracket shell crank housing is marked with the serial number and date:

H 1 1 7 4 9 3
3
1943

We checked elsewhere and were not able to locate any other markings or data plates. The configuration is completely correct for a Model 18, and it really looks great. It even still has the original tire pump, still in place on the center support, though we do not know if it is still functional. The bicycle also has what is most likely a reproduction tool roll under the rear seat, which contains a 3/4" - 5/8" spanner wrench, a 1944 Dated U.S. Issue 9/16" - 3/8" spanner wrench, and set of stamped steel pliers.

Condition is really very nice, with the only real issues being the missing lens on the head lamp, and also the front support on the front fender has had the rivets / screws strip, so it is no longer attached.

A great WW2 U.S. Military Bicycle, ready to add to your collection and display!

History of the G-519 Military Bicycle

Though the US Army had used bicycles during WWI and for the years leading up to WWII, it did not standardize procurements for the two-wheelers until 1942. According to military records, the Army's official use for bicycles was: “To provide transportation for personnel engaged in dispatch or messenger Service.”

Giving the bicycles the designation G-519 (or M305) the Ordnance Department adopted the “Bicycle, Military, Universal in October 1942. A version of the Westfield Columbia bike, it was equipped with heavy duty rims, spokes, a battery-powered headlight on the front fender, a tool bag attached to the saddle for basic tools. In addition and basic tools were carried in a tool bag attached to the Persons saddle.

Westfield Columbia manufactured the bike as the Series MF and MG. Huffman did likewise, as the Model 81, though with minor differences. Westfield Columbia also made bicycles for the US Marine Corps. These have frame numbers preceded by “MC.” The main differences between the MC and Army MG bicycles is that the former does not have holes in the front fender for a headlight, and the rims are flat, bead-lock types fitted with special US Rubber tires.
