Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice World War Two Era 48 Star American Flag, in a large displayable 8' x 9 1/2'. The flag body is of multi-piece cotton bunting construction, with the stars separate pieces sewn on, with a sturdy 2 inch canvas bunting header, marked DIXIE BUNTING. The header is very faintly maker marked by METRO FLAG CO / PHILA. PA., and to the right of this is a size marking of 8 X 12 F. This means that at some time in the past, the end of the flag trimmed and hemmed, probably because it became "wind whipped", or maybe simply to hang it vertically and not have it touch the floor. It has heavy iron hanger loops at either end of the header for flying the flag.
The flag does show wear, and definitely had a long service life. There are some small tears and fraying at the edges, and some of the stars are worn and torn. It has the usual age toning, so the white is now somewhat beige. A very nice example, ready to become the backdrop for your WWII display!
The general rule of thumb is that cotton flags were issued during WWII and nylon flags were issued during the Korean War. Flags made prior to WWII were made of a wool blend. This flag is made from multiple pieces of fabric, with sewn on white stars and zinc grommets. Condition is very good, with the expected age toning and wear from service, as shown. There is some tearing and tattering at the far end of the flag. A fine example of a WWII flag.
