Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous WWII leather-bound journal kept by Cheedle Vincent Caviness, who spent time fighting in Italy from 1943-1944 before returning stateside. As the journal mentions, he was tired of being a “Pentagon Commando” and requested overseas service again. He was assigned to the 502nd Bombardment Group and this journal tracks his service from that point, March 1945, until he returned home again in September 1945. There are 90 pages of writing as well as some documents in the very back of the book from his time training with the 315th Wing, and a very well-done drawing of a naked redheaded woman. His dialect is very telling of the period, and his use of curse words is very familiar!
The book has a period leather cover which he embroidered with his first name, Cheedle. On the interior cover he talks about how this will keep a record of his two-year trip in the Pacific the same way his other journal was kept in Europe. He keeps many entries about his dreams which is very interesting to see in a diary of this period! He mentions the death of Ernie Pyle, being stationed at Pearl Harbor for a while, and his time in Guam. It’s very clear he hates having to sit in an office when he could be overseas fighting. His time in Europe certainly changed him.
The drawing of the naked woman is on page 37, around June 2nd, 1945, with the caption A REAL REDHEAD. There is a ton of soldier culture in this journal, and one could spend hours reading through these very relatable entries. He speaks about philosophical topics, including the idea of death. There is truly too much in this journal to mention, and there are only 90 pages of writing! Roughly 2/3rds of the pages are empty, which is really saying something. There’s a photo of Cheedle and his friend on the final page.
This is a phenomenal journal with tons of history, a fantastic research project for someone with the time! Comes ready for further research and display.
