Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Personalized WWII Issue M1 Helmet Liner by Westinghouse, which has been painted for use by an officer in the 69th Infantry Division. The helmet is adorned with Late WWII 69th Division Insignia on each side of the helmet. The helmet body itself is painted white, with a circular red design at the crown. The liner has a set of (decal) Captain’s bars on the front, and (decal) Major’s oakleaf on the back. This liner may have possibly been done as “gag” gift at the promotion of the officer from Captain to Major. The numerous humorous slogans are lighthearted in nature including “Thanks a Lot Your(sic) In” , “The Dud”, “Yard Bird”, “How’s Your Thing?”, “Dont Jerk Me Around”, and “Count Felix”.
The liner is correct "high pressure" WWII issue and stamped with a W for the Westinghouse Electric Co Manufactured in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this "high pressure" manufactured M-1 helmet liner is identified by an embossed "W" in the crown (which is still Westinghouse's logo to this day). Westinghouse was the largest M-1 helmet liner producer and had two production divisions; Micarta and Bryant Electric. The Micarta Division produced about 13,000,000 M-1 helmet liners and the Bryant Electric Division about 10,000,000. Westinghouse Electric Company started M-1 helmet liner delivery in May 1942. Westinghouse did have a contract to produce airborne liners and converted an unknown amount to airborne configuration. Westinghouse discontinued production around August 17, 1945 when the war ended.
This true US WWII M-1 helmet liner can be identified through the frontal eyelet hole, which this example clearly has. The suspension is complete and in good order. The "A" shaped washers are still present, but show a lot of oxidation to their blacked brass finish.
A great, unique helmet ideal for the advanced collector of WWII US GI headgear!
