Original U.S. WWII 957th Field Artillery Battalion Bronze Star and Photo Grouping for Sergeant Charles E. Edwards

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Grouping Available. This is a fantastic little grouping attributed to Sergeant Charles E. Edwards of the 957th Field Artillery Battalion. He was the son of Mrs. B. Edwards, of Farris Texas and husband of the former Marjorie Duff. Entered the US Army in October, 1941 trained at Ft. Sill, Okla; Camp Roberts, Cal., Ft. Lewis, Washington and Camp Gruber, Okla.; He served in battery E 188 filled artillery regiment from 1941 until the regiment was restructured in February 1943 becoming the 957th field artillery battalion. He served in Europe in five battle campaigns including Normandy and the battle of the bulge. He served in the countries of England, France, Belgium and Germany with “B” Batter 957th field artillery battalion. He was awarded the EAME Medal with five Bronze Stars, American Defense Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and other honors. He was discharged in September, 1945.

The items in this grouping consist of an unmarked Bronze Star medal with presentation box and ribbon device (no lapel device), 7 photographs and a luggage sticker for VII REST CAMP. We believe this to be the Gagliano Winter Quarters, which was north of Florence, Italy. The soldier could not handle the continued stress of living at the front lines under the constant shelling and danger. Some statistics say that a soldier can not spend more than 30-days in combat at the front lines without losing his fighting abilities.

The rest camps allowed the soldier to refresh his mind as well as his body. This also provided time for the unit to re-organize and re-train in order to be more effective. The rest centers provided the Allies an advantage in combat that was not available to the Germans.

The most interesting photograph is the image of Sergeant Edwards receiving his Bronze Star Medal. The backside of the image has text with a little information on when and where he was awarded:

SGT CHARLES E. EDWARDS, FERRIS, TEXAS, MEMBER OF FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION, 1ST U.S. ARMY, RIGHT, RECEIVES BRONZE STAR MEDAL FROM BRIG. GEN. WILLISTON PALMER, COMMANDING GENERAL VII CORPS, ARTILLERY, 1ST ARMY, AT CEREMONY NEAR SANGERHAUSEN, GERMANY.

All items are in wonderful condition but do show wear without any extensive damage. A lovely grouping ready for further research and display.
