Item Description
Original Items: Only One Lot of 2 Available. Now this is a grouping with fantastic repair potential! This lot consists of (2) M2 Paratrooper Switchblade Pocket Knives. These knives were the standard issue item for U.S. Airborne forces from WWII through the 1960s was a switchblade pocket knife. These knives were intended for paratroopers to cut their parachute shroud lines and anything else if they got entangled following a jump. All of the versions are quite rare and hard to find, partly because they continued to be used for years following their military service life, and simply wore out.
The Knives In This Lot:
- Schrade Presto M2 No.3 Paratrooper Knife with Black Plastic Handle: This wonderful example offered in fair condition is marked on the base of the blade (ricasso). The 2nd and 3rd lines are very faint, and reads as follows:
[GEO. SCHRADE]
KNIFE CO. INC.
B’P’T. CONN.
and
PRESTO
The earliest model of these had a "jigged bone" handle, but as the war progressed, a simpler textured metal grip design was introduced, which was painted black. Unlike other versions, this one came in two sizes, the smaller No.2, which was the same size s the No.1, and the larger No.3, which is what we have here. It has an original overall length of 8 3/4", compared to the 7 1/8" inch of the No.2 and later No.4 and No.5.
- WWII style Korean War Airborne Schrade Walden NY M2 Pocket Knife: The example here was manufactured sometime between 1950-1956. These are almost identical to the WWII issue, with the main differences being markings and the more durable plastic grips. This nice service worn example offered in fair condition is marked on the base of the blade (ricasso) as follows:
SCHRADE
WALDEN
NY
Overall measurement is 7 ⅛ inch, with a 4" long blade. The spring is broken and the knife itself does not lock in place. Artificial horn grips show signs of honest wear, and some slight cracking to each grip panel. Our example shows signs of honest wear from use, and very light sharpening, as well as some past oxidation.
Both knives would need to be repaired in order to function properly. The springs are broken and or worn, the buttons stick and the safeties are worn as well. Both still display wonderfully.
Comes more than ready for further research and display.
