Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. During World War II the U.S. Government issued millions of posters by hundreds of artists and distributed them widely throughout the country. The Office of War Information, working with various departments, was responsible for nearly all the posters. Most can be considered either warnings (careless talk), or encouragements (do your part), or fundraisers (buy war bonds).
The bonds that financed World War II were originally known as Defense Bonds, but after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 they were called War Bonds. As the war progressed, and towards the end they were referred to as Victory Bonds. These bonds played an enormous part in winning the war. There were eight specific War Loan Drives conducted during the war from 1942 to 1945. Each drive was expected to bring in an additional $9 to $15 billion for the war effort. Over the course of the war some 85 million Americans purchased bonds – often in small denominations. About $185 billion was raised for the war effort from the sale of bonds.
This Official U.S. Treasury Poster was created and issued in 1944 by the U.S. Government Printing Office. The poster features a photograph of General Dwight D. Eisenhower saluting against a red and white striped background. The text at the top reads "Back ‘Em Up!” with the text “BUY EXTRA BONDS!” in white text on a blue background. The whole scene is very patriotic in nature, as they were meant to be! Patriotism is always rampant during times of war and conflict and the easiest way to catch the eye of the average American, images such as this one, were produced.
This 28” x 20” poster is in lovely condition displaying signs of moderate wear to the corners. There are multiple pin sized holes on all four corners as well as tape over them. The colors are still very vibrant and clear.
This is a beautiful example of a WW2 era poster and features a very prominent leader in American history, General Eisenhower! Comes ready to display.
