Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Well this is something that we have not had before! Most are familiar with the large 37mm Signal Flare pistols made by International Flare-Signal Co., but this is a much smaller "M2" model, with a frame and 2 1/4" "barrel" made entirely of brass. Instead of having a breech that opens, the flare on these muzzle loaded, with the rim of the casing held in place by a brass latch on the left side of the pistol. Also unlike the larger version, these are double action, and even have a grip safety. They were designed for "Driggs-Faber" type 2 inch long flares, about 37mm in diameter.
The pistol is marked on the right side with the model information:
PISTOL, PYROTECHNIC-M2
No. 7037 INSP. F.A.M.
U.S. (Crossed Cannons) PROPERTY
These look to be Army type markings, but this could have also been used by the Navy. The bakelite grip scales give the full manufacturer information:
INTERNATIONAL FLARE-SIGNAL CO.
TIPPECANOE CITY, OHIO
DRIGGS
FABER
SYSTEM
MADE IN U.S.A.
PATENT NO. 1712382
The pistol measures about 7 inches tall, and 5 inches long. It is in very good overall condition, in complete working order with firing pin still present, though it is worn down. It even still has an original coiled lanyard attached by an "S" clip to the ring on the bottom of the grip. There is a bit of the bakelite missing from the bottom rear of the left grip scale, as shown.
Very interesting and ready to display!
