The armed forces of Great Britain were very large users of the Thompson Submachine Gun well before the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into the Second World War. One of their modifications to the Thompson was so good that it is still in use throughout the world, wherever assault rifles are used. This innovation is the use of the assault sling configuration, in which the sling is attached to the TOP of the butt and to the LEFT side of the foregrip. This permits the gun to hang in front of the body in its natural position for use, making it much faster to bring into action and steadier when firing.

To make this conversion, the butt sling swivel was moved to the top (heel) of the butt and the original mortise in the bottom (toe) of the butt was filled with a wooden plate. If the butt did not have the cross bolt at the front, two long wood screws were countersunk into the stock in this location. The exact location of these could vary. A standard SMLE sling swivel was attached to the left side of the vertical foregrip, or, if the Thompson had a horizontal foregrip, the existing swivel was moved from the bottom of the grip to the left side. An additional modification was also made to the butt on most modified guns, which involved drilling a small-diameter hole angled off the main butt trap hole. This additional hole is intended to house the weight of the pull-through.

This is a magnificent display gun built from excellent genuine WWII Thompson M-1928 parts and reassembled with a beautiful non-firing BATF approved original reassembled WWII issue Thompson receiver. Every part on this display gun is original WWII manufacture other than 20% of the receiver replaced by solid steel (as required by BATF). It has British WWII modified front and rear stocks that are textbook, down to the hole for the pull through in the oiler trap. It also includes an original WWII steel oiler as well as a Kerr Extension gun sling.

Original WW2 parts include:
- 80% original reassembled ATF approved non-firing receiver (complete with original arsenal markings!) - Serial NO.S-324279, indicating production by Savage Firearms, or their Contractor Stevens.
- Early detachable Walnut Butt Stock without British Modified Sling Location and Cross Screws. There are also British Arsenal Markings stamped into the wood, as well as some painted on.
- Complete Lower Frame Assembly with crossed original serial number NO.S-84966, also produced by Savage / Stevens.

This example is typical of the British early war issue Thompson M1928A1, with the more delicate adjustable Lyman Sight, and 30 round magazine. It also has the early style buttstock, and correct machined sling swivel mounts. It has beautifully finished walnut furniture that has that red brown color only achieved after years of age.

The Thompson 1928 sub machine gun is perhaps the most recognizable firearm of World War II, made famous by the Airborne Troops of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. This military model differs from the original commercial model in its 20 round magazine and its horizontal foregrip. Though heavy by today's standards, the weight helped control the .45 caliber bursts when operated on full automatic.

The Thompson submachine was invented by John T. Thompson in 1919 and became infamous during the Prohibition era. It was a common sight of the time, being used by both law enforcement officers and criminals. The Thompson was also known informally as: the "Tommy Gun," the "Trench Broom," the "Trench Sweeper," the "Chicago Piano," the "Chicago Typewriter," and the "Chopper." The Thompson was favored by soldiers, criminals and police alike for its ergonomics, compactness, large .45 ACP cartridges, and high volume of automatic fire and among civilian collectors for its historical significance.

Many new made replica and Airsoft Thompsons flood the market today, but this is an opportunity to own a true piece of history, a genuine WWII Thompson receiver in wonderful condition and totally legal to own in the USA by federal law without any type of license.
