Original Items: Only One Grouping Available. This is a stunning collection of items that are attributed to Lieutenant Russell L. Schafer, a valiant member of the 450th Bomb Group from Cleveland, Ohio. Schafer's was part of the 15th Air Force, 450th Bombardment Group that was formed in 1943. It played a significant role in World War II as a B-24 Liberator heavy bombardment group under the Fifteenth Air Force in Italy. The group was affectionately known as "The Cottontails," thanks to the white paint on their bombers' vertical stabilizers.
The 450th Bomb Group was the recipient of two Distinguished Unit Citations, which were awarded in recognition of their support for the invasion of Southern France, the advancement of Russian troops in the Balkans, and their contribution to the Allied effort in Italy. These citations are a testament to the group's bravery, skill, and dedication in the face of adversity.
The group continued to operate until October 1945, when it was disbanded. The artifacts attributed to Russell L. Schafer are a vivid reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the 450th Bomb Group, and all the men and women who fought for the cause of freedom during World War II.
The Grouping consists of the following items:
- The standout item among the Grouping is undoubtedly the A-2 Flight Jacket once owned by Lt. Schafer. The Jacket boasts a striking 450th Bombardment Group “Cottontails” Patch on the right chest, which immediately captures your attention though it is heavily stained. On the left chest, there is a leather name tag with the name “R. Lee Schafer” etched into it, which adds a personal touch to the jacket. Sadly, the original label is no longer present, but the jacket itself is approximately a US size 42 and has retained all the original components from the period, including the original knit waistband and sleeve cuffs. These original components are seldom seen on A-2 jackets that have seen extensive service, but the jacket has managed to keep them intact. Another notable feature is the CONMAR brand zipper, which is still functional even after all these years. Finally we found a pack of original WWII CAMEL cigarettes in the right front pocket, the cigs were gone but the outline in the lather of the pocket indicates that they sat there for decades after the war.
- Summer Service Dress Uniform: This exquisite uniform jacket is in superb condition and boasts a striking 15th Air Force Bullion Embroidered shoulder sleeve insignia on the left. The insignia is skillfully embroidered with fine gold and silver wire onto a blue felt base, giving it a luxurious and captivating appearance.
The front left of the jacket features an elegant set of Navigator Wings, which are crafted with remarkable attention to detail. These wings are an iconic symbol of the United States Air Forces and were awarded to navigators who successfully completed the rigorous training program.
While there are a few minor stains present on the jacket, which is normal for light-colored uniforms, they do not detract from the overall beauty and elegance of the piece. It is important to note that there is no extensive damage present, ensuring that this jacket will be an eye-catching addition to any collection.
- Crusher Cap: One of the most iconic pieces of headgear to come out of WWII was the U.S. Crusher Cap, or “Fifty Mission Cap”. This visor cap, in “Winter Green” issue color. The outward appearance is extremely worn from honest use, and decades of storage wear. It retains the original iconic "crush" shape. The cap was certainly used and is a bit misshapen from long storage, However, with some effort and form fitting it will come back to form. The visor portion is very worn, partially detached and stained. The leather adjustment strap on the back and the leather chinstrap on the front are in rather delicate condition.
- The last few items consist of Schafer’s duffel bag, a pack of CAMEL cigarettes (found in jacket) and a small research packet, showing his initial enlistment paperwork (copies). All items are named to Schafer, something rarely encountered as most soldiers didn’t mark all of their gear.
A fantastic grouping that comes more than ready for further research and display.
