Original Item. Only One Available. The Government tried to identify the most effective poster style. One government-commissioned study concluded that the best posters were those that made a direct, emotional appeal and presented realistic pictures in photographic detail. The study found that symbolic or humorous posters attracted less attention, made a less favorable impression, and did not inspire enthusiasm. Nevertheless, many symbolic and humorous posters were judged to be outstanding in national poster competitions during the war.
This is a great linen-backed WWII poster depicting Navy destroyer escort DE 280 at the head of a convoy of ships, with a large explosion in the water immediately behind it. Superimposed over the image is a recreation of a Navy dispatch from Rear Admiral E.L. Cochrane: "U.S. Navy Dispatch. To producers of equipment for DEs: The battle of the Atlantic is a battle of time. The U-boat wolf packs won't wait to strike. Don't keep our DE 'wolfhounds' waiting. Do your part - make your part - on time! Rear Admiral E.L. Cochrane USN, Chief of the Bureau of Ships."
The poster was meant to inspire workers to keep at their jobs manufacturing parts for ships and other military machines. Offered in good condition, all colors are vibrant and easily discernible. It has some toning and edge wear & staining but the poster is linen-backed, meaning it is well-preserved. It measures roughly 29½ x 40”. It’s marked at the bottom for Lutz & Sheinkman, New York, and the Navy Department.
A great example, reading for framing and display.
