Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral's Flag, which is made of wool, indicating early 20th century production. It is not dated, so we are not able to tell when exactly it was made, but the style indicates WWII or possibly even earlier. It has a nice canvas header, sewn around the hanging rope, which is 40 inches long, with a brass ring at the top, and a brass spring clip at the bottom. It measures 36 by 24 inches overall, and is dark navy blue, with two white stars in it.
Flags such as this were for use on ships, to indicate that it was carrying a "flag officer", which was a Navy officer of high enough rank to fly a flag from the location of their command. The smaller size of this flag would indicate that it may have been used with a smaller ship or launch, when being used to transport a Rear Admiral.
Condition of the flag is good, but it does have some moth nip holes and overall age toning on the header. A very nice U.S. Navy item, perfect for any display!
