Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is an excellent condition example of a genuine WWII Floyd Nichols Fighting Knife complete with an Alfred Cornish leather sheath. Floyd Nichols was a World War I veteran who manufactured fighting knives for WWII. When the war first started, there were not enough knives to give to every soldier. This prompted the government to ask for people to donate knives. Some donated knives, and others, like Nichols, decided to start making them for the soldiers going off to war. Alfred Cornish was a saddle maker who helped Nichols by creating sheaths for the knives. Early knives by Nichols, like this example, had a buffalo nickel embedded at the top of the hilt, because his last name was Nichols. The buffalo nickel on this example is clearly dated 1936.
The leather sheath in deeply stamped:
... ROBERT M. BURGESS ...
.. 37511085 ..
As well as:
ALFRED CORNISH
OMAHA NEB.
The side of the knife guard is stamped: ROBERT M. BURGESS 37511085
“It was thought that about 1,200 or so of these were made in total. The reason people like knives like this is because it really represents the one-on-one independence the soldier would have for self-defense. It's really the last resort, would be the close combat fighting. And so it has a real symbolic meaning to soldiers and collectors. This is really at the highest level of knife workmanship.”
Research shows that Robert M Burgess, born Dec 31, 1922, Army Serial Number 37511085, Enlisted on February 26th, 1943 at Ft Leavenworth Kansas. He listed hi hometown as Dickinson County, Kansas. He served the duration of the war.
