Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Constructed in 1917 as a coastal defense fortification of the U.S. Army, Fort Saulsbury was later utilized during World War II as a Prisoner of War camp, housing up to 300 German & Italian POWs who provided labor for a variety of local agricultural activities.
This is an extremely scarce sign from the POW Camp at Ft. Saulsbury. Measuring 7½ x 30”, the sign is painted yellow with black text reading:
FT. SAULSBURY
P/W CAMP
There is an arrow pointing towards the camp. There is some green paint on top of the original paint which thankfully doesn’t block any of the text, so the sign is still very readable. There are also some scratches on the front and a couple small cracks on the back, but this doesn’t affect the structural integrity of the sign. It will need some help being mounted. This is an extremely scarce sign, the first of its kind we have ever offered. It will add some great color & character to your WWII Collection.
This is a fantastic sign in great condition, ready for further research and display!
