Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available: This a very rare fully functional (and loud) U.S. WWII Hand Crank Air Raid Siren, complete with the original canvas cover, still attached by a metal chain. These covers are almost always missing, and of the 3 we have had previously, only one still had the cover.
The siren is maker marked on the reverse:
FEDERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, INC
CHICAGO
Constructed predominately of aluminum with integral one piece carry handle and crank handle. These were originally painted OD green, however the paint does not stick to the aluminum very well, so often these are missing a lot of the paint. However, this example still probably has around 80% of the original paint, and looks quite nice. It still has the cover and screen to protect the rotor, items that are often missing.
The canvas cover is in good condition, though it does have wear and is somewhat dirty, Both snaps work, but there are some verdigris on them. There are also some small splits and tears in the fabric.
Shown below is another example we sold previously, which sounds just the same, though this example does not have strap shown in the video:
These sirens were used for Air Raids and possible Gas Attacks both during combat situations and on the Home Front. This mobile handheld version is the hardest to find of any WWII siren. We do not see these often at all, and this is only the fourth U.S. hand siren of this type we have had!
