Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a wonderful example of a hard to find WWII fighting knife in really good condition, complete with its original belt scabbard. During WWII there was a very large demand for fighting knives, particularly in the Pacific theater. Not all soldiers would normally be issued them, so the private market for fighting knives was booming.
The Herder "COMMANDO" is one of the rarest U.S. fighting knives used during WW2. Theses bare bones knives were available in several variants, and were definitely utilitarian, having simple carved handles, and the cross guards were all made with heavy twisted brass wire, similar to what was used for WWI belt clips. This example has a 5 7/8" single edged spear point blade, double marked two rivet wood grip, and twisted brass wire hand guard. These are very hard to find in such nice condition, where the carving on the handle is still sharply defined, and the blade not showing extensive use and sharpening. The two rivet handle is marked on both sides, with the right side reading COMMANDO and the left reading:

The leather sheath is intact and solid, and matches the "pancake" style these are usually found in. On the types with larger blades the sheathes were often marked by Herder, but the varieties with narrower blades commercially available sheaths were common.
A really nice example of a rare fighting knife, one of the best examples that we have seen, and only the second Herder Commando that we have ever had. This would be a fantastic way to fill out a World War II US military knives. Ready to display!
