Original U.S. WWII Japanese Inert Type 99 Mine - From Japanese Mine Training Aid Set No.2

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Mine Training Aid Set No. 2, Japanese consisted of a wood transit chest with metal hinges and latches holding several WWII U.S. made inert Japanese explosive devices for use as training aids. This kit was designed for issue to Engineering units, in order to prepare men for the task of dealing with Japanese ordnance in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. While this is not the whole training kit, this Type 99 “Magnetic” training mine would be a welcomed addition to any WWII ordnance collection or could be used to complete that missing spot in your No.2 Training Mine Set!

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT OR SHIPMENT TO CALIFORNIA ADDRESSES.

The Type 99 (Hako-Baku-Rai) mine was a Japanese anti-tank weapon used during the Second World War. It entered service in 1939. Four magnets were attached to the casing made of hemp cloth, along with an external fuze. The fuze had a time delay, which enabled it to be used as an anti-tank hand grenade, or a demolition charge. Once the safety pin was removed, it was armed, striking the fuze ignited a powder delay train. The mine detonated after a five to ten seconds delay, giving enough time for it to be thrown.

The mines could be stacked, held together by the magnets for greater effect. When used individually the mine could penetrate approximately 0.75 inches (19 mm) of steel, with two mines stacked it can penetrate 1.25 inches (32 mm) of steel.

This example is in wonderful condition and comes more than ready for further research and display.
