Original U.S. WWII “Keep ‘em Flying!” Poster Used by US Army Recruitment Station in the Federal Building of Sheridan, Wyoming - 28” x 20”, Artwork by C.C. Beall

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Congress established the nation's first peacetime draft in 1940 by passing the Selective Training and Service Act, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 35 to register for potential military service. Once the United States entered the war, the requirement expanded to include all men 18 to 65 years of age. This poster is dated for August 1941, just a short time after this act was passed and four months before the attack at Pearl Harbor.

This lovely poster features artwork by American illustrator C.C. Beall, issued by the United States Army Recruiting Service. Beall is known for creating the artwork in one of the most infamous posters used during WWII, the 7th War Loan “Now All Together” of the Iwo Jima flag raising. Beall did work for many of the leading periodicals of the twentieth century. His watercolor style was in a type of bold contrasting reflections, which was popular at the time. Some Meredith magazines that he produced paintings and colored drawings for included Collier's, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Woman's Home Companion, Saturday Evening Post, American Family Circle, and This Week. He also painted covers for Elks Magazine and Reader's Digest books.

The design of the poster incorporates vignette illustrations of the home front and of military personnel to form a composite bust portrait of “Uncle Sam” whose tilted head and firm jaw projecting resolve and determination to fight the war.

On the left there can be seen a factory worker, a scientist, a nurse, and a farmer holding a sheaf of wheat that morphs into Uncle Sam’s beard; on the right, an airman, a sailor, and a soldier holding a rifle with bayonet. Printed at the lower corner of the image is a patriotic poem by Jack Childs that concludes “So—‘Keep ‘em Flying!’”

The overall condition is quite nice and is presented with a few small tears and wear but nothing that subtracts from the beauty. Truly a beautiful poster that comes more than ready for further research and display.
