Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous example of a WWII Era Mameluke Marine officer’s sword named to Major Michael McGinnis Mahoney, who was Killed in Action as the result of a plane crash on 23 October 1942 near Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. The sword features lovely ivoroid grip scales that are still in great condition, with minor cracking and some yellowing.
The sword has developed a gorgeous patina over the years. The Mameluke sword is a very iconic edged weapon with roots in the Marine Corps going back 219 years to the First Barbary War. This example is etched on the blade with Michael M. Mahoney, for Major Michael McGinnis Mahoney, who was killed in Action on October 23rd, 1942.
The brass guard with double langets and acorn finials has strong traces of gilt, as do the two star-embossed rivet caps on either side of the bone grip. The hole for the sword knot in the pommel retains both of its brass washers. The scabbard is the regulation pattern: nickel plated with narrow brass throat, rings and ring bands, the latter cast with a leaf design. The brass shoe-style drag has a raised rose blossom and leaves on either side of the blade. There is some gilt on the throat and drag, but the brass has mostly a medium, aged patina.
Mahoney was born on August 5th, 1906 and first joined the Marine Corps in 1927. During his career he served in the states, in China, the Philippines, Cuba, and ended up as a Captain and soon a Major while serving during World War II. He became a very popular officer in the 7th Marines and was only 36 years old when he was killed in action when his plane crashed over the Solomon Islands.
The sword is a great example overall and a phenomenal piece commemorating the service of this fallen marine. Comes ready for further research and display.
