Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous piece of WWII U.S. soldier trench art, a captured Italian M1935 Canteen which has been engraved on both sides. This canteen depicts the insignia of the 26th “Yankee” Division gorgeously engraved on one side with American flags surrounding it, with the soldier’s name, Arthur L. Forney, below it. The opposite side depicts a castle in Linz, Austria in 1945, with floral motifs around it. There are small etchings across the rest of the canteen, including on and around the cap, a beautiful piece of work!
The original carrying strap is broken but the ends are still intact, which really help the display value. We conducted some preliminary research on Forney, and did find a photograph of him later in life on his Find-a-Grave, but there is still much work to be done.
A gorgeous piece of WWII trench art, the 26th Infantry Division distinguished themselves during the Battle of the Bulge, making this a great research project! Comes ready for further research and display.
