Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The National Safety Council (NSC) is a nonprofit, public service organization promoting health and safety in the United States. Headquartered in Itasca, Illinois, NSC is a member organization, founded in 1913 and granted a congressional charter in 1953. Members include more than 55,000 businesses, labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private groups and individuals.

The group focuses on areas where the greatest number of preventable injuries and deaths occur, including workplace safety, prescription medication abuse, teen driving, cell phone use while driving and safety in homes and communities.

In 1912, the first Cooperative Safety Congress was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The event was sponsored by the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers. The approximately 200 attendees, representing industry and government, resolved to “organize and create a permanent body for the promotion of the safety to human life in the industries of the United States."

At the Second Safety Congress in 1913, the National Council for Industrial Safety was established. It was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois and Robert W. Campbell served as first president and William H. Cameron served as secretary. The name was changed to National Safety Council in 1914, to reflect the organization's expanded scope to include traffic and home safety. As membership increased, the NSC began producing posters, technical fact sheets, and other publications. In 1953, the U.S. Congress and President Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized the importance of the NSC’s efforts with a Congressional charter to: “...arouse and maintain the interest of the people of the United States... in safety and in accident prevention, and to encourage the adoption and institution of safety methods by all persons, corporations, and other organizations."

This NSC poster by the National Safety Council features artwork by Ralph Moses. The features a bright orange background (to catch the eye) and a silhouette style image of a pilot who appears to have just bailed out of an aircraft and is pulling his parachute cord, there is a trail of white smoke behind him. The text at the top reads IT HAS TO WORK EVERY TIME and the message being that you have to ensure your work is done properly and all the needed quality checks are done. The bottom text reads ARE YOUR safety precautions dependable? Safety in any workplace environment is vital to the success of the business as well as the safety of the individual. In the left bottom corner, just above the large text is a “disclaimer” featuring the “Minuteman” and a war bonds advertisement.

The poster is in excellent condition with minor wear to the corners and still has the original shipping creases from when the poster was shipped.

Guns, tanks, and bombs were the principal weapons of World War II, but there were other, more subtle forms of warfare as well. Words, posters, and films waged a constant battle for the hearts and minds of the American citizenry just as surely as military weapons engaged the enemy. Persuading the American public became a wartime industry, almost as important as the manufacturing of bullets and planes. The Government launched an aggressive propaganda campaign with clearly articulated goals and strategies to galvanize public support, and it recruited some of the nation's foremost intellectuals, artists, and filmmakers to wage the war on that front.
