Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. On 15 August 1944, the beach of Sainte-Maxime was at the centre of Operation Dragoon, the invasion and liberation of Southern France during World War II. "Attack Force Delta", based around the 45th Division, landed at Sainte-Maxime. After fierce house-to-house fighting the Germans were defeated and eventually surrendered. By the foot of the Harbor pier and by La Garonette beach in the far east of the commune, memorials at the respective landing places honor the United States troops. At La Garonette beach, but formally in Les Issambres, (Roquebrune-sur-Argens commune), the sailing center is named La Batterie, as it was the location of a German artillery battery.

This is an incredibly rare Operation Dragoon Top Secret BIGOT Map of Sainte Maxime France Dated July 1944. It measures 29" x 22" and has original fold lines. It is constructed of heavy paper and is offered in very good to excellent condition. The reverse side is in color are features a Panoramic Beach Sketch. This is an ultra rare wartime map that was TOP SECRET!

One of the most secret operations in military history. A top secret clearance wasn't good enough without a "Bigot" classification. 20 soldiers with the program worked on the 5th floor of Selfridges Department Store in London. Many more worked in other clandestine areas.

Prior to D-day on April 27, 1944, "OPERATION TIGER," an evening practice beach landing, was conducted on the coast of Devon county in southwest England by the U.S. 4th Division which was scheduled to land at UTAH BEACH. SLAPTON SANDS Beach closely resembled the area which they would land in Normandy. German intelligence picked up allied radio traffic, and nine German E-Boats sailed from their base in Cherbourg and created a large-scale disaster. Lst 507 and Lst 531 would be sunk; Lst 289 was badly damaged, but would make port. 746 men were killed -- more then four times the losses suffered at Utah on D-DAY. General Eisenhower wanted all bodies recovered, especially those 10 that had been issued a "BIGOT" clearance. All were recovered, and the mission was still secure.
