Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a silver zippo style windproof lighter, which is named on the side with: MAJ. J. P. OWEN JR.. The bottom of the lighter is marked SILVER 950, and it still sparks correctly. We do not see any reason why it could not be restored to working order.
These lighters have been popular souvenirs since the WWII era, and based on the Japanese Mt. Fuji landscape and shoreline shown on the case, this lighter definitely was a souvenir from Japan, most likely the Post WWII occupation, or possibly during the Korean War. The engraving is very well executed, and appears to show Feudal Era japan, with rice fields and old style bridges and roads common in the 19th century. There are some sailing boats shown as well.
The lighter is silver plated, while most Vietnam era lighters would have been chrome plated, so we definitely believe this lighter to be from the 40s or 50s. It has a lovely tarnished patina on the silver, and would display well as is, or could be gently polished to really make it stand out.
