Original U.S. WWII Thompson M1928A1 Display SMG Used by British 6th Airborne Division - D-Day Museum De-acquisition

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is really fantastic, and unlike anything we have had before! Made from a De-acquisition from the D-Day Museum, this is a magnificent display gun built from excellent genuine WWII Thompson M-1928 parts and reassembled with a beautiful non-firing BATF approved original reassembled WWII issue Thompson receiver. Every part on this display gun is original WWII manufacture other than 2 inches of solid steel replaced in the receiver (as required by BATF).

The left side of the butt stock has the following stamped into the wood:

PROPERTY OF THE
D-DAY MUSEUM

The right side has even more interesting information stamped into the wood, and then highlighted in white:

This Tommy Gun made the jump
with British 6th Airborne Division
June 5, 1944

Museums routinely de-acquire items in favor of more compelling pieces, as space is almost always limited in both the display and collection warehouse spaces. We purchased this at a recent military show as a partial parts set, and built it into this display gun using the original parts.

It is set up in the British Airborne style, with the sling swivels moved to the side of the fore stock and top of the butt stock, which was more comfortable when slung across the back. The foregrip has been checkered, as we have seen with many similar examples that IMA has handled over the years.

Original WW2 parts include:

- 80% original reassembled ATF approved non-firing receiver (complete with original arsenal markings!) - Serial No. A.O. 59908, indicating production by Auto-Ordnance, the designer of the Thompson Submachine Gun.
- Detachable Walnut Butt Stock with added reinforcement screws and sling swivel moved to the top as per British Airborne style. Butt stock has the previously described museum markings.
- Complete Lower Frame Assembly with serial number NO.S-222259, indicating production by Savage Firearms, or their Contractor Stevens. It has also been remarked several times.
- 10.5" Finned Live Barrel
- Cutts compensator with patent markings
-
Walnut Pistol Grip
- Wartime Rear "L" Sight by LYMAN
-
Walnut Horizontal Fore Grip with sling swivel moved to the side and checkered as per British Airborne style.
- 20 Round Magazine (Deactivated where required)
- Original OD green later war issue Thompson Kerr Sling.

This example is typical of the wartime Thompson M1928A1, with the more resilient "L" sight, and 20 round magazine. It also has the correct early machined sling swivel mounts. It has lovely oil finished walnut furniture that has that red brown color only achieved after years of age.

A fantastic historical piece, ready to add to your collection and display!

The Thompson 1928 sub machine gun is perhaps the most recognizable firearm of World War II, made famous by the Airborne Troops of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. This military model differs from the original commercial model in its 20 round magazine and its horizontal foregrip. Though heavy by today's standards, the weight helped control the .45 caliber bursts when operated on full automatic.

The Thompson submachine was invented by John T. Thompson in 1919 and became infamous during the Prohibition era. It was a common sight of the time, being used by both law enforcement officers and criminals. The Thompson was also known informally as: the "Tommy Gun," the "Trench Broom," the "Trench Sweeper," the "Chicago Piano," the "Chicago Typewriter," and the "Chopper." The Thompson was favored by soldiers, criminals and police alike for its ergonomics, compactness, large .45 ACP cartridges, and high volume of automatic fire and among civilian collectors for its historical significance.

Many new made replica and Airsoft Thompsons flood the market today, but this is an opportunity to own a true piece of history, a genuine WWII Thompson receiver in wonderful condition and totally legal to own in the USA by federal law without any type of license.
