The lamp features a lovely black painted Japanese Type 100 81mm mortar round on a wood base, which has a channel for the cord to go into the bottom of the round. While the original paint markings the round had were painted over, the stamped arsenal markings are still present on both the body and fuse. The side of the round bears an arsenal marking and is dated after that: 10 五 十 昭. This marking is written right to left, and would be read: SHOWA (current reigning emperor) Juu-Go Nen (15th year of reign - 1940), probably the tenth month of October. The fuse is marked the same, except the number is 5, for the month of May.
The lampshade that is being used is a genuine Japanese WWII Army Type 92 Tetsubo Combat Helmet shell, which has been repainted OD green and still retains the original metal star on the front. The liner has been removed, and a hole drilled in the top to attach it to the lamp. It shows cracks on the left side, which pre-date being turned into a lamp, so it was probably a "battlefield pickup".
The lamp stands at approximately 28” tall with a 9 3/4" x 6 3/4” wooden base. The lamp has been tested and is fully functioning, however no lightbulb is included.

Nothing better captures the nature of human experience than the art chosen to depict it. Few human experiences are more dramatic than war, and this art by soldiers in an American division in World War II is particularly compelling. They answered their nation's call and gave their all on the battlefields of Europe, with unwavering loyalty to their comrades as their finest attribute. The men of these American Divisions fought to liberate Italy and other European countries from the evils of Fascism. The battle was hard and the price was high, both for the soldiers and for the countryside over which they fought.
