Original U.S. WWII US Navy 24 Hour Ship’s Clock by the Seth Thomas Clock Company Dated June 1944 - Functional

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Seth Thomas Clock Company was founded by Seth Thomas and began producing clocks in 1813. It was incorporated as the "Seth Thomas Clock Company" in 1853. The company manufactured clock movements for the Self Winding Clock Company from 1886 thru the early 1890s, in addition to its standard offering of longcase clocks, mantel, wall, and table-top clocks.

Many Seth Thomas clocks from 1881 to 1918 have a date code stamped in ink on the case back or bottom. Usually, the year is done in reverse, followed by a letter A—L representing the month. For example, April 1897 would appear as 7981 D, this example is a much later produced one and where the date code there is the serial number 58637 -E.

On May 7, 1926, Seth Thomas Clock Company filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for trademark protection of the Seth Thomas brand with regard to clocks. The trademark was granted with a registration date of October 12, 1926 and assigned registration number 0219268. The trademark is still active as of the last renewal date of February 17, 2017.

The Seth Thomas factory made countless clock movements during and prior to the second world war. This example is of war time production and dated June 1944 and the date is confirmed on the back of the clock itself, not the case.

This is genuine U.S. Navy Bulkhead Mounted Clock, made by the Seth Thomas Clock Company. It is mounted in a dust proof and moisture proof black phenolic case with a 7 ⅞” dial. It features hour and minute hands on the main dial as well as the seconds hand.

The case for the clock opens up and the three small flathead screws are still able to be removed to inspect the back of the clock, this is where you will find the production date. There is an adjustment for the speed of the clock but no “stop” option as seen on other examples of ships clocks. We have not been able to wind the clock due to the key being missing, but the second hand still moves and it does appear to keep good time, it just needs to be wound.

The face reads as follows:

SETH THOMAS
U.S. NAVY
58637 -E

Clock face measures approximately 7 ⅞ inches in diameter, with the outer housing measuring about 10 ¼ inches in diameter at the front, and 10 ⅝ inches at the back. It measures about 2 ¾ inches deep.

The US Navy used these throughout WWII to help indicate the time while on the bridge or various other compartments of the ship, and afterwards. Would make a perfect clock for your office at work or at home!

There is no warranty for this clock and returns for a non-working clock will not be honored. Please note all clocks are wound and tested then recorded on video before shipment. We are not in the repair business, this is a display item only - ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
