Original Upmarket British Officer's M1858 Beaumont - Adams Percussion Revolver with Brazier's Patent Loader

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Beaumont–Adams revolver is a muzzle-loading, double-action, percussion revolver. It was originally adopted by the British Army in .442 calibre (54-bore, 11.2mm) as a modification of the Adams revolver already in service. On 20 February 1856, Lieutenant Frederick E. B. Beaumont of the Royal Engineers had been granted a British patent No. 1685 for improvements to the Adams revolver which allowed them to be cocked and fired either by manually cocking the hammer as in Colt single-action revolvers, or by just pulling the trigger. Beaumont was granted a US Patent (no. 15,032) on 3 June of the same year. Once production started, the revised revolver was so popular the Colt was forced to shut down their London factory due to lack of sales.

This example is a very upmarket version, with loads of original engraving on the frame and barrel, as well as on the trigger guard and butt cap. Whoever purchased this was definitely not someone of small means. The grip is lovely single piece walnut, with strong checkering. It also has been fitted with some very upmarket custom features.

The revolver some of the original color with the rest polished and cleaned away, and is marked on the top of the barrel strap with the retailer information:-

WILKINSON & SON 27, PALL MALL, LONDON

It is also marked on the right side of the frame with:

E. 9309
ADAMS' PATENT No 24980

This revolver has also been fitted, either as part of original manufacture or as customization by the retailer, with a much improved loading rammer. The device looks to have given the owner much better leverage and accuracy when loading the chambers in the cylinder. This is a patented design apparently, and the lever is marked JOSEPH BRAZIER'S PATENT No 481. There even looks to be a small sliding bar on the right side of the frame to help seat the caps on the nipples.

These revolvers were extremely popular with British serving Officers, who were expected to supply their own sidearms. This is a 5 shot revolver which features a loading lever on the left side of the barrel which when raised rammed the paper cartridge into the front of the cylinder. The custom rammer on this example makes this process far easier.

Overall condition is very good, and the revolver is fully functional in both single and double action, with good lockup and indexing. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, and a mostly bright finish.

Fully working order, and excellent upmarket example, ready to display!
