Original Victorian Era Belgian Double Barreled Brass Pocket Percussion Pistol - Circa 1840

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely utilitarian double barreled brass framed pocket percussion pistol, made in Liège, Belgium for the European and American export markets. These were quite popular for self-protection, and having two barrels definitely would give the owner increased protection. Pistols like this were equally at home on dark Streets of New York or of London in Victorian England.

The smoothbore barrels measure about 3 1/2" in length, and are one solid piece, most likely machined out of a single piece of brass. The pistol measures almost 7 1/4" overall, perfect for an overcoat pocket. It is marked on the left side with E / L G / * in an oval, indicating manufacture in Liège, Belgium. There is another proof mark above this, standard for the Belgian guns, which usually represent a specific inspector. There are no other markings on the pistol whatsoever. The pistol features a very nice wooden "bag" style grip, which is very comfortable to hold.

Condition of the revolver is good, showing that it definitely did see significant use during its service life. The interior of both bores shows fouling and oxidation, and there is definitely wear and light denting to the exterior of the pistol. The hammers and cap nipple cones both show some powder burn from use. The pistol functions, though it definitely is finicky. The left side lock has a weak trigger / sear spring, so it often does not hold at cock at all. The right side works much better, but it does not hold at half cock.

A very nice early Victorian Era self defense pistol, ready to Display!
