Original Items: Only One Set Available. Remember the film The Lives of a Bengal Lancer starring Gary Cooper (an honorary Englishman at the time)?
This is totally original and extremely impressive. It has just been acquired from one of the finest collections of its kind in the United States.
The set consists of:
Red Melton cloth maternity style tunic with blue facings and cuffs heavily adorned with gilt braiding.
Epaulettes of gilt roping. One still retains the gilt and velvet rank insignia of Major.
Coveralls (pants) are navy blue and have wide red stripe. Cut is very tapered for Cavalry use. The hems are especially high cut in the front to accommodate classic tall officer's boots.
Wide tasseled red waist sash adorned with stripes of the regimental colors of green, yellow and blue.
Gilt buttons, all present, bear the Bengal regimental cypher including "crossed lances" and show a King's Crown.
Officer's body sash over the right shoulder to left hip displaying stripes of red and gilt brocade.
In the other direction, from the left shoulder to the right hip, is a magnificent similarly decorated cross belt that is secured by a sterling silver hallmarked buckle assembly and holds an unusually long sterling silver document box with regimental devise to central panel.
Gilt roping aiguillettes of very high quality, under the arm and across the chest.
All this is set off with the officer's turban style helmet constructed of pleated gilt and orange lame fabric on a blue body.
Comes complete on a full size custom-built display manikin!
This uniform dates from as early as the 1890s with updating, after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, with "King's Crown" buttons. It no doubt saw service at Lord Curzon's Great Durbar for the newly Crowned King Edward the Seventh and Queen Alexandra during their official visit to India in 1903 when all the various Indian Maharajahs gathered to swear fealty to the King of Great Britain, the Empire and Emperor of India.
