Original Victorian Era British Double Barrel Turnover Pocket Percussion Pistol by Smith of London - Circa 1840

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely British double barreled "turnover" pocket percussion pistol, marked on the left side of the box lock frame with SMITH / LONDON. This most likely refers to William Smith, who worked 1810-1845, but could also be Samuel & Charles Smith, who worked 1849-1874. It features double barrels, and a single trigger / hammer, with a pivot allowing the barrel assembly to "turnover", bringing a loaded barrel into position after the first barrel was fired. These were quite popular for self-protection, and having two barrels definitely would give the owner increased protection. Pistols like this were equally at home on dark Streets of New York or of London in Victorian England.

The smoothbore barrels measure about 2 1/2" in length, and look to both be "screw off" types, attached to a rotating breech / cap bolster. However, the screw joints at the breech are now seized. They have 8 notches around the muzzle end for attachment of a tool to unscrew the barrels. Both Barrels are marked on the side with the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC marking from Birmingham, England, which produced large amounts of material for the London gun market. The pistol features a very nice finely checkered wooden "bag" style grip, which is very comfortable to hold, and has a silver escutcheon on the back.

Condition of the revolver is very good, looking to have seen only light use during its service life. The interior of both bores shows fouling and oxidation, and there is definitely wear and light denting to the exterior of the pistol. The hammer and cap nipple cones both show minor denting and powder burn, indicating light use. from use. The pistol functions, holding at half cock and firing at full. There is a bit of wobble in the turnover hinge, which could probably be tightened up.

A very nice early Victorian Era self defense pistol, ready to Display!
